City Gössnitz
The small town of Gößnitz as a fulfilling community for Ponitz and Heyersdorf has about 3,450 inhabitants. On August 17, 1253 Gößnitz was first mentioned in a document and on March 18, 1718 city charter was awarded. Interesting also: Gößnitz is located at 610 meters, the longest covered platform in Germany. This is where the north-south highway Berlin-Leipzig-Altenburg-Hof-Munich and the west-east highway Frankfurt-Erfurt-Gößnitz-Dresden meet. Gößnitz also has something to offer in terms of culture. The listed Winkelhof, for example, has functioned as the Heimatstube since 1999. The extensive fundus presented there can be visited from May to October on Saturday and Sunday as well as by appointment. The cabaret "The Nörgelsäcke" is known beyond the boundaries of the district.
The Gößnitzer Heimatmuseum The so-called "large school" was converted by the urban housing company to a residential building, the "small school" also fed new users. As early as 1996, the city library moved into the ground floor. After further alterations, the KulturCentrum Gößnitz was finally built. On the ground floor, a hall with approximately 100 seats for concerts and other events was created from two former classrooms. On the first floor the clubs can use several rooms. The attic was handed over to the Johann Friedrich Agricola Music School, Gößnitz branch office. The former gymnasium next to the town hall was rebuilt into a town hall and inaugurated in 2001. From 2002 to 2003, the Freedom Square was completely redesigned and handed over on 28 August 2003, in time for the 750th anniversary of the first mention of Gößnitz and 285 years of municipal law. After three years of construction work on the roof and façade, the town church of St. Annen shines again in new splendor.
