Ortenaukreis
Climate and quality of life of the Ortenau are comparable with the conditions in Tuscany. Here, the sun shines more often than in other areas, which brings excellent wines and is reflected by a matching kitchen.
Situated between the Rhine and the Black Forest, characterized by a charming landscape and a mild climate, the Ortenaukreis is the largest district of Baden-Württemberg with 1,861 square kilometers. In the 51 towns and communities of the Ortenau live about 420,000 inhabitants, of which about 183,000 in the major district towns of Offenburg, Lahr, Kehl, Oberkirch and Achern.
A 60-kilometer common border with France and the immediate vicinity of the European city of Strasbourg provide the district in the geographical center of the European Union special location advantages.
The Ortenaukreis belongs to the Black Forest Central / North Nature Park, the largest nature park in Germany, and the Black Forest National Park, the first and only national park in the country. Picturesque wine villages nestle against the hills and valleys of the foothills. In the Rhine plain, farming villages spread in the fertile landscape. The intensive gravel extraction also created numerous lakes.
In the Ortenau you will still find the typical Black Forest postcards in many places: wide sunny valleys like the Acher-, Kinzig-, Rench- or Schuttertal, which stretch for many kilometers into the Black Forest, low hipped roofs at the Black Forest farms, women in Bollenhut-costume. The low mountain range, the cities and the Rhine plain make the Ortenau a true sport, leisure and recreation paradise. The Europa Park Rust is a crowd-puller well known far beyond the country's borders, Strasbourg just a stone's throw across the Rhine and Baden-Baden just around the corner.
The Ortenau offers a high quality of life with its numerous recreational opportunities, as well as a wide range of culinary offerings and top restaurants.
